Some of our local Dive Sites The club has been diving for so many years in Metro waters that we have gathered a huge library of dive sites. You may be familiar with some of the sites listed but others are unique to the UEC. Some sites are named after long serving UEC members. Anders' Meander (Horton Reef, Rottnest) Approx. 20m. Collection of deep holes in seabed forming a system of caves ranging in depth from 14 to 22m. Intricate web of interconnecting swim troughs. Superb visibility at this enchanting site. Angela's Cave (North Point Reef, Rottnest) Approx. 26m. Large bridge spanning the huge open cavern. There are a series of smaller caves and gaps in the rock surrounding the gully. Top of reef is 14m dropping down to a sandy bottom of 26m at the base of the gully. Wide variety of fish, shells and crayfish are sighted at this magnificent dive site. Barry's Cave (Kingston Reef, Rottnest) Approx. depth 9m and inside the Thompson Bay Marine Reserve. Big caves and gullies in this very attractive area. Long, deep closed-in gully and tunnel which leads to the mast section of the Denton Holme. The iron screw steamer SS Macedon is nearby. Crystal Palace (near Dyer Island, Rottnest) Approx. depth 18m. Site consists of a large complex of big, high doomed caverns. Contains wide variety of soft corals and abundant fish life and occasionally turtles. Geordie Bay Caves (off Geordie Bay, Rottnest) Approx. 9m. Attractive diving in large cave system with swim-through. crayfish and shell life abound in this area. Many varieties of fish life dwell in these caves. Jumbo Cave (Radar Reef, Rottnest) Approx. 19m. Named for the large number of big crayfish inside the cave. Areas of ledges and fissures line the cave walls. Corals and a wide variety of marine life are also found inside this cave. Kerry's Cavern (Horton Reef, Rottnest) Approx. 22m. Beautiful area consisting of many large flat caverns with lots of swim throughs and connecting galleries. Soft corals and a wide variety of marine life abound in this area. Maree's Aquarium (Bathurst Reef, Rottnest) Approx. 9m. Massive linked cave system. Large schools of reef fish, crayfish shelter in this system. Many branches and vents exist creating good lighting effects for growth of marine flora within the caves. Martin's Arches (West End, Rottnest) Approx. 14m. Series of very large open caverns and arches of rock ending in a large bowl of rock carved into the cliff face. Well stocked with fish and crayfish. Wobbegong sharks are often seen in these caves. One of the best sites at Rottnest when the weather is suitable. Parker Point Drop off (Parker Point, Rottnest) Approx. 25m Sheer cliff face runs for 200 m. Many ledges, overhangs and niches generally covered in sponges and soft coral. A huge stingray is often seen here. A number of other great sites nearby like Branchetti's Bommie. Roe Reef (North East Rottnest) is a popular site with every diver. UEC has a number of different sites here. Victoria Station, Dark Cave, Flat Cave and Elder Point are some. Stragglers Rocks is where we do a lot of our single dives. The sites here include Hugals Passage, Mini Swirl and Murrays Chambers. Often overlooked, some of the the diving sites here are better than Rottnest itself. The Cathedral (Cathedral Rocks, Rottnest) Approx. 12m. Recorded in the Perth Dive Guide as one of the most spectacular dives in the Perth area. Large domed cave with holes and fissures creating a lighting effect reminiscent of the interior of a church. Difficult to locate but the marine life is less shy as divers are rarely in this area. |
