Photo credit - Taryn Schuster A massive thank you to the 8 divers (Emma, Perry, Halim, Ian, Andre, Pat, Jim and Kelly) who helped out with our Port Coogee Marina Cleanup on Saturday. We had a mixture of club members, MUD divers and other divers who saw our adverts and wanted to help out - including a fellow pen holder who’s dive buddy bailed on him so he decided to join us instead! Also a huge shout out to John and Tess who helped me out as land crew on the day.
We were greeted by a Dolphin and its bub whilst we were setting up our gear and the weather conditions were near on perfect. Unfortunately the viz for our divers when they got in ranged from soup to not too bad. This did make it somewhat difficult to get their orientation and navigation on track. The land crew were able to keep track of everyone by their bubbles at least.
Interesting finds underwater included a shopping trolley, traffic cones, various steel pipes, a bottle of wine, a plastic cray pot and a toilet! In good news however the divers reported there wasn’t a lot of rubbish such as food and drink items. However there seemed to be a lot of items that may have fallen from boats in the pen including brooms, mops, hose fittings, towels, a sleeping bag, dive mask and an umbrella.
Overall it was a successful day and all divers reported they enjoyed themselves and would love to help out again. Despite most being a little exhausted post dive, it was nothing a good shower and beer didn’t fix. Thanks again to Sam (Marina manager) for her assistance on the day and organising the rubbish collection by the council.
