Halmahera, located in Indonesia's Maluku Islands, is an undiscovered paradise for divers. Known for its pristine coral reefs and rich marine life, it’s a part of the Coral Triangle, offering an exceptional diving experience away from the crowds.

What You’ll See.

Halmahera’s waters are teeming with vibrant marine life:

  • Manta Rays: Regular sightings of these majestic creatures gliding through the clear waters.
  • Tropical Fish: Colourful schools of parrotfish, butterflyfish, and clownfish fill the reefs, alongside macro critters like pygmy seahorses and frogfish.
  • Sharks: Expect encounters with blacktip and whitetip reef sharks, and sometimes grey reef sharks.
  • Turtles: Green and hawksbill turtles are often seen feeding or resting on the coral.
  • Coral Gardens & Walls: Stunning, untouched coral reefs and dramatic underwater walls that drop to great depths.

Located in East Kalimantan, Indonesia, Derawan Island is renowned for its crystal-clear waters, vibrant coral reefs, and rich marine biodiversity. Derawan offers an exceptional diving experience, with the chance to dive alongside one of the ocean’s most magnificent creatures—the whale shark.

What You’ll See

Derawan’s waters are home to a variety of spectacular marine life:

  • Whale Sharks: Dive with the gentle giants of the ocean. Derawan is one of the best places to encounter these awe-inspiring creatures in their natural habitat.
  • Manta Rays: Glide alongside these majestic creatures as they move effortlessly through the water.
  • Turtles: Green and hawksbill turtles are commonly seen, feeding or resting on the vibrant coral reefs.
  • Sharks: Encounter blacktip and whitetip reef sharks patrolling the area.
  • Vibrant Reefs: Explore Derawan’s colorful coral gardens, teeming with schools of tropical fish and macro critters such as mantis shrimp and nudibranchs.

Important Information for Dive Bookings

All members should have access to the dive calendar on the website and mobile app. If you're experiencing any issues, please don’t hesitate to Contact Us for assistance.

Please do not book dives for other divers. If we receive double bookings from one diver, the second booking will be automatically cancelled.

If you would like to receive notifications about dive cancellations during peak periods, please email Donna at divebookings@uecwa.com.au with your name and phone number to be added to the WhatsApp group.

Guests on the Boat
A reminder: For all boat trips (including Christmas lights), UEC members must be on the boat with any guests booked under their membership.


Cancelling a Dive Ahead of Time

Important to note that you cannot cancel dives using the dive calendar. Cancellation needs to be by email directly to Donna at divebookings@uecwa.com.au

Please note our cancellation policy below as per the club bylaws:

Cancellations between 07:45 and 16:00 the day before: 50% cancellation fee.

Cancellations after 16:00 the day before: 100% cancellation fee.

No-shows: Full event fee.

Appeals for waivers due to medical reasons or family emergencies can be submitted in writing to the committee.
