Cape Cruiser’s New Engine - Update
24th July 2024
By Tom Bassett
Hi everyone.
Just a bit of an update as to what is happening with the boat at present.
As you all know John and I took the boat up to the Fremantle Sailing Club a couple of weeks ago.
Since then, the old motor has come out, the rudder, prop and prop shaft removed and all the old instruments taken out, all the bits and pieces in the hold under the Cabin had to be removed for inspection for corrosion.
It seems that area is ok, however more corrosion was found in the stern hold than at fist though so a Hull plate has been completely cut out and a new piece is being welded in. The new engine mounts for the new engine are also being welded in.
On the stern, when the exhaust was removed, the hole around where the exhaust exits, is also badly corroded so that section of the hull has to be cut out and a new piece welded in.
I was informed by the fabricators that the V Berth hull needs a serious clean out. So everything has to be taken out of there, the hull area Vacuumed out and inspected. We have to make sure there are no loose screws, nuts, bolts lying around in there that can start to corrode and cause issues.
We will need helpers when that happens, probably on a weekend when the contractors aren't working on the boat, so we don't get in their way. Keep an eye and an ear out for when that may happen please.
John and I are the only two with access keys to the boat yard at present, but we can organise to transport people in. There is plenty of parking in the Sailing Club car park.
The fabricator also suggested we paint the inside hull of the engine bay with an Aluminium Primer then a paint specifically designed for that purpose, however that's for the committee to think about.
I currently have all but two the Club Dive tanks, 02 tank and 02 equipment off the boat at my place until the boat goes back in the water. John has the other two tanks.
I will send more updates on when ever I get down to the boat.
Best regards to all for now.
